Today, youth involved in the legal system represent one of the most high-risk and high-needs populations of young people in the United States, with an overrepresentation of youth from minoritized groups, and very low rates of treatment engagement [6, 14]. Much of our own work focuses on understanding and addressing behavioural health (BH) treatment needs and barriers to care among youth on probation, who account for the greatest percentage of youth involved in the legal system [6]. For these youth, treatment need is identified in one system (the legal system) but must be addressed through a separate system (communitybased BH). Although youthsL BH problems often precede their involvement with probation, their treatment needs frequently go unidentified and/or unmet, making probation a critical context for linking youth to care. However, a recent study found that fewer than 10% of youth on probation with documented need, initiated treatment [13]. Here, we argue that although communication challenges and mistrust-between youth/caregivers, probation staff, and local BH providers-contribute critically to this treatment gap, multi-level solutions can help.
