During the recent years, a considerable attention has been paid to the specific toxicity of the environmental substances, such as mutagenicity, teratogenicity and carcinogenicity. In view of their influence upon our progeny, the former two properties will be of great importance. Hence, the establishment of screening methods of mutagenicity and teratogenicity and its reasonable evaluation become urgent. Human chronic poisoning of cadmium is well known as a clinical entity of •gItai-itai disease•h, and its specific toxicities have been examined in a variety of animal experiments1). As for mutagenicity, the examination of gametes will be more specific to its effect on the subsequent generations. We therefore examined the in vivo effects of cadmium on the oogenesis of the mouse cytogenetically. This paper provides additional data to our preliminary report2) and describes the detailed analysis of the results.
