An experiment utilizing the black mutant in Tribolium castaneum was designed to determine the contribution of mating behavior to the fitness of a genotype. The results indicated that, on the average, a male genotype produces relatively more offspring when it is in a minority than when it is in a majority. While frequency-dependent mating success may have been present, the experiment was unable to separate this effect from the frequency-dependent progeny production. The net result of the frequency dependence reported here and entitled frequency-dependent progeny production would be the maintenance of genetic variation in a population.
