A system concept for an experimental high performance multi-processor system for a real-time environment is reported upon. A graphical language is introduced first as an intermediate language to describe explicitly the maximum parallelism which exists in target problems. The language is basically a class of data-driven languages in which history-sensitive processes are incorporated into the pure data flow schemata. Programs written in the diagrammatic form are then translated into an executable scheme to be run on a specific multiprocessor system after syntax checking and program validation by a translator and by a validator explained briefly in the paper. A hardware system described in this paper as an example is a common-bus multi-processor structure equipped with a high-speed, highly reliable hardware resource allocator which ensures efficient, flexible and expandable function assignment within the system for maximum exploitation of the parallelism expressed by the language. This paper also deals with a built-in emulation/monitoring facility which offers the users a versatile system development as well as performance evaluation aids. 14 references.
