Fixed rabies virus infections of mice were studied using fluorescent antibody staining in addi tion to conventional histological and virological methods. Following intracerebral ors/cinoculation virus was detectable only in neurones, and infection was limited primarily to neurones of rhinencephalic structures, brain stem nuclei, dorsal root ganglia, anterior horns, and cerebellar Purkinje cells. During the incubation period, antigen developed slowly ovei five days within the perikaryon and dendrites of susceptible neurones, and no antigen was found in axones. Despite the development of large amounts of virus within neurones, there was a paucity of neuronophagia and no inflammatory reaction. Fol lowing s/c inoculation virus was found to spread rapidly to the c.n.s. along peripheral nerves without evidence of infection of the endoneural cells or any extraneural tissues. These findings are different from those observed with other experimental viral encephalitides, and possible explanations of these unique properties are discussed. (AS).
