Daphnia react to kairomones from a variety of predators (Chaoborus, Notonecta, fish) by altering their morphology, behavior, and life history. The adaptive nature of induced life history shifts in the presence of these predators has not been established clearly, with these changes being alternatively viewed as either the cost of morphological defenses or as anti-predator adaptations themselves. I use the statistical techniques of meta-analysis to combine the results of more than two dozen studies that examine life history shifts in Daphnia in response to different predators. This analysis produces general conclusions on these life history responses, their relationships to each other, and their role in the evolution of antipredator defenses.
