Citizenvolunteerscanplayanimportantroleinstream� monitoringprograms,�butreliablemethodstoevaluateecological� conditionareoftenlackingforspecificecoregionsoftheUnited� States.� Wedevelopedandvalidatedastreammonitoringmethod� suitableforthecoastalplainsandlowerpiedmontregionsofVir- ginia.�TheCoastalSaveOurStreams�(SOS)�methodisbasedonfour� metrics�(%Ephemeroptera,�Plecoptera,�andTrichopteraexcluding� Hydropsychidae;�%Coleoptera;�%Tolerant;�and�%Gomphidae)�that� areeachrankedonascaleof�1-6�basedonmetricvaluesobtained� infieldsamples.�ThismethodproducesatotalSOSscoreranging� from�0�to�24,�withhighervaluesindicatingthatthestreamisin- creasinglysimilartoundisturbedstreamsintheregion.�Scoresfrom� theCoastalSOSmethodwerehighlycorrelatedwithscoresfrom� professionalassessmentsin�13�streamsusedtodevelopthemethod� (r = 0.93),�andanadditional�13�usedtovalidateit�(r = 0.91).�We� confirmedthattrainedcitizenscouldsuccessfullyusethemethodin� thefield,� obtaininganunbiasedsampleofthebenthiccommunity� andaccuratelyclassifyingorganismsinto�21�taxonomiccategories� neededtousethemethod.�Seasonalandannualvariationinscores� wasrelativelyhigh,�andsowerecommendthatcitizenscollectat� leastthreeseasonsofdataovertwoyearsbeforedrawingconclusions� abouttheecologicalconditionofanyparticularstream.�
