Almost all simulations need a notion of place – where are the simulated events supposed to occur? The task of modeling the environment is intended to provide this notion of place and has different degrees of difficulty. Modeling the environ-ment is relatively easy for simulations that use fictional or very approximate rep-resentations of the physical environment (usually called “geo-typical” models of the environment). The degree of difficulty increases dramatically along with in-creases in need to model real locations (known as “geo-specific” models of the environment) with increased levels of accuracy and fidelity. This chapter provides an overview of some important considerations related to environmental modeling, including: data acquisition, coordinate systems, data transformation, and database correlation.
