Argument structure has been used to refer to various things in the literature. In the logical tradition, argument structure refers to the number and type of arguments that are associated with a predicate (eg a verb). The argument structure of give is a three-place predicate, requiring an agent, a theme, and a recipient argument. On this view, then, one and the same argument structure is expressed by the ditransitive and dative patterns, as in (1) and (2):
