Fertilization, chronologically a relatively short process, is a complex sequence of coordinated molecular events in gamete interaction starting at gamete recognition and terminating at first cleavage division. Understanding this process is relevant to clinicians, because evaluation of its steps may define the levels at which fertilization can fail and allow corrective measures, can help to design tests demonstrating different modalities of fertilization arrest, and can allow to interfere with the process with contraception methods at the gamete interaction level. The human natural process is almost unknown, and events in the in vitro setting have to be used to understand the in vivo process. Fertilization involves the fusion of the gametes with activation of the oocyte and establishes the genotype of a new individual (l). For a normal process to occur, the gametes should have normally undergone a complex process of proliferation, chromosomal exchange and reduction at meiosis, differentiation, maturation and transport, to end up in the different membrane fusion steps that occur in the sperm and the oocyte first. and at different levels of gamete interaction sec-ondly, until cleavage division occurs. Fusion processes may happen between not fully mature sperm and oocytes: penetration alone is accomplished without the normal subsequent steps occurring (2).
