Existence and generality of competitive reactions during hydrogenation of Mg/Cu superlaminate composites were investigated experimentally. Two types of MgCu2forms, 3D-network and layered ones, were observed after hydrogenation of the composites under the conditions of 573K, 86.4ks and 3.3MPa of H2. We proposed that Mg/Cu super-laminate composites could be hydrogenated by two kinds of processes. The one is alloying Mg with Cu to Mg2Cu followed by hydrogenation of Mg2Cu, leading to the formation of 3D-network MgCu2. The other is hydrogenation of Mg followed by a reaction of MgH2to Cu, leading to the formation of layered MgCu2. However, the reaction of MgH2to Cu under hydrogen atmosphere is not known in general. Therefore, in order to prove the existence and the generality of this reaction, pellets of MgH2and Cu powder were heated under the conditions of 673K, 86.4ks and 8.0MPa of H2. The formation of layered MgCu2was confirmed by SEM observations.
