This special issue of Ecotoxicology is dealt with selected papers presented at the ‘International Workshop on Marine Pollution and Ecotoxicology’held during February 25–26, 2004 at the National Institute of oceanography, Dona Paula, Goa, India. The theme of this special issue is ‘Biomarkers of marine pollution and microbial degradation of pollutants. Marine pollution has become a global concern because of bioaccumulation of residues from various types of pollutants such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs), heavy metals, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and radionuclides in tissues of various species of marine organisms and their bio-magnification across the food chain leading to serious threat to human health. In recent years, levels of contaminants in the marine environment have increased to a large extent as a consequence of various anthropogenic activities. Most of the coastal areas around the world are reported to be damaged due to pollution, significantly affecting marine resources. In view of the stringent situation caused by marine pollution there is an urgent need of the hour to develop biomarkers for rapid assessment of the impact of various types of contaminants on the marine environment and thereby help undertake appropriate remediation measures. The papers presented in this issue are classified into two sections.
