Legend has it that Alfred Stock initiated his exami-nation of boron hydride chemistry from a deep and abiding conviction that boron, the element adjacent to carbon in the periodic table, must partake in more in-teresting bonding combinations than those that had been found in boric acid and the boron oxides that were then known. 1 Subsequent findings, of course, have more than amply borne out Stock’spredictions. Per-haps even more important thanthe then undreamed of structural complexities of the boron hydrides and their derivatives, however, is the way in which the structural and bonding considerations that were first uncovered in borane chemistry have later, sometimes much later, been encounteredin areas that are entirely unrelated to boronchemistry. One trivial example is the MHC “agostic” interaction which is nothing more (or less) than the well-studied BHB and BHM bridge bonding translated into an organometallic set-ting.
