The eruption rates of the mandibular incisors of eleven adult laboratory mice (Mus musculus) were measured thrice a week for 5 weeks in three periods: L of five intervals, eruption being naturally impeded; II, of five intervals in which the left incisors, being shortened artificially, erupted unimpeded; HI of four intervals, in which occlusion returned to normal. Impeded eruption was at rates averaging 156[mu]/day, S.D.53. Unimpeded eruption of the left incisors in Period-II averaged 414[mu]/day, S.D.72: these rates were a surprise, for values > 1000[mu]/day were expected from what was known of rat, cavy, rabbit and coypu. During Period-II the right mandibular incisors shortened on average 0.43 mm, increased their level angles and greatly increased in rate of eruption to average 315 [mu]/day, S.D. 48 [mu]/day. Depression of rates of eruption did not follow in Period III: these last two results contrast mouse with rabbit. Sources of random and systematic error were shown not to affect significantly the main results, nor the correlations between the eruption rates of an incisor pair during Period-I (r = +0.78) and Period-II (r = +0.45). The interincisal bony tips showed changes interpretable as osteolysis of the left tip by about 58[mu] during Period-III; in which period the incisors also moved apart, apparently bodily, by about 40[mu]. No correlation was found between the impeded and the unimpeded rates of eruption of an incisor. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: Author
