However, I did find the book interesting and there are many anecdotes and asides which add life to the text. For instance, I was unaware that beingin the limelight'is a reference to a lamp invented by Thomas Drummond and introduced into the theatre as a spotlight in the 1840's, which burnt lime in the flame of an oxygen-hydrogen torch. The style is very journalistic and although this makes for easy reading it can be frustrating after a while, particularly with repetition of phrases (just in case we didn't bother to read them the first time round) and many short sentences without verbs.Until 1987.'andIncluding war.'are extreme examples of complete paragraphs. I regard the book really as a rapid tour throughLife, the Universe and Everything'and at that level it is quite interesting. It is easy to read and is well illustrated with black and white photographs and 26 colour plates. But don't expect it to go into any subject at more than a general interest level, and don't expect any justification for assertions such as thatthe new quantum physics... also brought us... purile sit-coms on TV, and a national attention span geared to 30-second commercial messages.'
