A high pressure liquid chromatographic system is presented for the separation and analysis of complex mixtures of monofunctional carbonyl compounds as their 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazones. The sensitivity limit is about 5 nanograms and quantitative results are obtained by reference to an internal standard. The estimated precision of the method is ±2.5% relative. Application of the method for the determination of carbonyl compounds in auto exhaust is cited. In addition, a second high pressure liquid chromatographic system capable of eluting difunctional carbonyl 2,4-dinitrophenyl-hydrazones is presented.
