Conceptual designs of the π core and dual π core switched reluctance motors have been proposed for traction motors of the electric vehicle. Compared to a conventional SRM, the three-phase π core SRM shows an increased average torque by 23% and reduced torque ripple by 41% from finite element analysis results, due to its characteristics of the isolated stator segments and short flux path. The π Core SRM has better performance in vibration and noise for its much lower torque ripple and radial force. In addition, the dual rotor π core SRMs with and without permanent magnets are introduced in this study. These dual rotor models have their potential applicability to in-wheel motor drives in the near future.
