The remarkable growth in the popularity of mendelian randomization (MR) studies—analyses using genetic polymorphisms as instrumental variables (IVs)—reflects both the importance of the causal inference problems addressed by MR and the potential power of the approach. 1 Although IV analysis is a well-established econometric tool, applications in health research using genetic information as IVs present novel challenges and opportunities.
