The enzymatic action of influenza virus (strain Lee) on urinary mucin inhibitor was investigated. It was found that 23-53% of the neuraminic acid of the mucin is split off by virus action. The neuraminic acid containing split product proved to be identical with N-acetylneuraminic acid. Heating with dilute alkali leads to the formation of pyrrole-alpha-carboxylic acid. In addition, there were some amino acids among the split products; it is not known whether these were produced as the result of enzyme action or not. There is little doubt that the split product obtained here is identical with that isolated by Gottschalk and that the cell receptors of influenza virus are identical with acetylneuraminic acid. The structure of this compound is discussed.
