Women, on average, live longer than men. 1 Ischemic heart disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women worldwide, but when women develop cardiovascular disease at later ages, it is more often accompanied by comorbidities that complicate their management. 2 In caring for patients of either sex, we prioritize averting death due to disease and avoiding death due to complications stemming from treatment of their disease. These efforts are so wholly intertwined that we may not even self-recognize that the calculation has occurred.
