Abstract The standard force equation, and Ampere's force equation for the magnetic force between current elements, are applied to determine the forces in a rectangular circuit, one side of which is mechanically separable from the other three. In order to explain the observed forces by the use of the standard equation, it is necessary to make the doubtful assumption that a part of the rectangular circuit can lift itself. Ampere's equation gives a reasonably correct value of the forces without the necessity of making this assumption.
