Intensive steel quenching methods—designated as IQ-1, IQ-2, IQ-3, IQ-4, and IQ-5—are discussed in this chapter. Illustrations of their application in industry are provided. The main idea of the intensive quenching processes consists of creating high compressive residual stresses at the surface of steel parts and small tensile residual stresses at the core. Such optimal residual stress distribution allows producing intensive cooling within the martensite range that significantly increases the mechanical properties of a material and improves its plastic properties. In the chapter, many exam- ples, using simplified calculations, are provided to aid in the design and application of intensive quenching processes in the heat-treating industry.
