The enzymic conversion of L-arabinose to both L-ribulose and L-xylu-lose by the formation of an intermediate, L-arabitol, has been observed in cell-free extracts of Penicillium chrysogenum. All enzymic products involved in these enzymic steps have been isolated and characterized. This finding emphasizes a common enzymic sequence for the initiation of pentose metabolism by this mold.
