F-18 FDG PET is a useful imaging modality in breast carcinoma for detection of recurrent disease, unsuspected regional and distant metastases, and in monitoring cancer response to therapy. Although preliminary results showed PET capable of differentiating benign from malignant diseases, the role of PET in primary breast tumor identification has limitations with the small size and certain histologic characteristics of the tumors, and inflammatory and infectious processes. To the list of false-positive PET results, the authors add a case of intraductal papilloma incidentally detected by PET during staging of intestinal adenocarcinoma.
