The state of safety assessment and risk analysis of flood defense works overseas is introduced briefly. Along with the reinforcement of Yangtze River main levee carried on at present, the feasibility and necessity of risk analysis and safety assessment of Yangtze River main levee are stressed. On the bases of considering the peculiarity of Yangtze River dike and our national condition, the theory, methodology and technique routes required for carrying out this research are mainly outlined and discussed.
