Electric power engineering education is facing a crisis. There is significant decline in enrolments in power courses at many universities. If this trend continues, the power industry will face shortage of trained engineering personnel. This paper explains how students are introduced to the basic concepts in power engineering in the early part of their academic program. Specifically, a course on numerical analysis is used to expose the students to various challenges in power system analysis and operation.
