‡This paper presents (1) an overview and brief history of the evolution of computational techniques to predict structural damage resulting from hydrodynamic ram (HRAM), (2) a brief description of the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) technique, (3) a brief description of the Coupled Euler Lagrange (CEL) technique, (4) a description of a test fixture and program to examine the HRAM loads generated by a 12.7mm projectile entering a water-filled container, (5) applications and comparisons of SPH and CEL techniques for modeling fluid structure interactions, and comparisons with experimental data. The authors have exploited the capabilities of the LS-DYNA® code to model HRAM effects. This paper will present comparisons of the simulation techniques with experimental data in terms of pressure-time histories, velocity degradation of the projectile, as well as high speed photography of the actual events.
