It is unclear how to make choices between product and process innovation under different leaderships in a changing competitive environment. This research aims to find out the three-way interaction effects of leadership styles, innovation ways and competitive intensity on firm performance by detecting three-way interactions involving slope differences in moderated multiple regression. Taking a sample of 182 high-tech enterprises in China, this paper finds that transformational leadership is more likely to facilitate product innovation while transactional leadership is more likely to facilitate process innovation. Moreover, product and process innovation are not completely complementary to performance in our test. In addition, this paper explores the joint effects of leadership, innovation and competition on firm performance, and discussed how to choose innovation path under different leadership and competitive intensity.
