ars, and policy makers who seek to understand the increasingly multilingual and multicultural population of the U.S. and to contribute to the shaping of how our schools teach languages to all children—not just to those whose native language is not English. As voters are increasingly faced with politically driven citizen ballot initiatives to curb bilingual education, as was the case in the November 2002 elections in Colorado and Massachusetts (where a ballot initiative was defeated in the former but passed in the latter), more work on the scale of that reviewed here needs to be inserted into the mix of policy considerations. No single book will turn the tide that has pounded bilingual education nor propel the importance of multiple literacies, but Language as Cultural Practice has the prospect of being an important document for elevating policy considerations about language education above polarized and reductionist viewpoints.
