Human Reproduction and Human Reproduction Update to be successful and important journals in their field. I have the remit to carry Human Reproduction forward and Richard Ivell and Bart Fauser have responsibility for the others. The journals may be owned by the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) but they serve a wider community of readers. We intend to work collaboratively to ensure that the three journals serve the Reproductive Biology and Reproductive Medicine Communities worldwide. All scientific journals are classified with respect to their subject areas. Human Reproduction stands within the categories of ‘Reproductive Biology’and ‘Obstetrics and Gynaecology’indicating its scientific and clinical credentials and judged by its impact factor in these categories the journal scores amongst the leaders. Whilst bearing in mind that the impact factors fluctuate year by year it is encouraging to see that, under Bob’s stewardship, the 1998 scores placed Human Reproduction second in both fields and in the recently released 1999 scores the journal was placed third in the ‘Reproductive Biology’category and first in ‘Obstetrics and Gynaecology’. What is important is that the journal remains in the top group regarding impact factor so that scientists (both basic and clinical) will want to publish their best work in its pages.
