Attenuation formulas are established for horizontal Peak Ground Accelerations (PGA) and horizontal Spectral Accelerations (SA) using a database of Chilean seismic records. This is the first Chilean study that includes the development of a spectral acceleration attenuation model. The database used corresponds to records of earthquakes from the Nazca plate and the South American plate interface (thrust-faulting) that occurred between 1985 and 2010. We have included accelerograms from the 2010 Mw 8.8 Maule Chile earthquake, one of the largest strong motion recordings world-wide. The earthquake database analyzed enabled a first estimation of spectral acceleration attenuation relations for Chilean interface earthquakes. The proposed formulas take into account differences in the soil type (rock or soil) according to the Chilean code soil classification. These ground motion prediction equations could be useful to improve the seismic hazard assessment in Chile and others similar subduction zones.
