MethodsPatient Population. Fifty-three newly admitted patients (26 men and 27 women) who met DSM-IV criteria (American Psychiatric Association, 1994) for mixed or pure manic episodes of bipolar I disorder provided signed informed consent to participate. All had been noncompliant with prescribed medications prior to admission; 28 were assessed before resumption of treatment with antipsychotic and/or mood stabilizing drugs; and the remainder were assessed within 7 days of resuming treatment, on average, within 3 days (Table 1).
