Quantitative methods of study were used in an attempt to observe the changes which took place within Amblyomma americanum. after pro-longed periods of starvation and after feeding on various hosts. This tick retained Bacterium tularense after prolonged periods of fasting, however, the number of tularemia organisms per tick decreased as the length of time after feeding increased. In feeding infected A. americanum upon various recovered and resistant animals no change in the percentage infected was observed, nor was a decrease in the number of organisms noted. On the contrary, a certain amount of increase in the number of organisms per tick was observed. The LD50 titration indicated a slight loss of virulence in the tularemia organ-isms upon tick passage.
