For decades, the main purpose of language assessments in schools was for summative purposes, with the test often viewed as a retrospective piece of judgmental evidence of students’ learning. However, current trends in language assessment research are calling for a shift from the summative testing paradigm to a “learning-oriented paradigm” where assessment is no longer just a judgmental piece of evidence regarding students’ learning, but also a tool that is used to inform teachers about their teaching and students about their learning process. In light of this, the term Learning-oriented Assessment (LOA) has emerged (Carless, 2007), whereby both teachers and learners are seen as part of the assessment process. Given the increasing popularity of LOA, there is a need for a resource addressing its theoretical underpinnings and practical implementations. This edited book, entitled Learning-Oriented Language Assessment: PuttingTheory into Practice, aims to fill this need. It enriches the readers’ knowledge regarding LOA from both theoretical and practical perspectives. The book is intended to serve as a resource for readers interested in understanding and implementing LOA. Gebril’s main aim in editing this book is to compile researchers’ perspectives on LOA from different parts of the world (eg, UK, Canada, Australia) and provide practical examples of how LOA has been applied in particular contexts (eg, Egypt, Malaysia), with the goal of making it possible for researchers and practitioners to generalize the findings to other setting and contexts. Following the introduction, the book is divided into two main parts, theoretical and practical, each of which consists of several chapters. The theoretical part of the book (Chapters 2–6) aims to systematically construct a comprehensive understanding of LOA and its different themes for the readers. The practical part of the book (Chapters 7–12) endeavors to highlight the role of the context in shaping LOA and seeks to address technological tools that assist in the implementation of LOA.
