The possibility of significant modifications of the surface structure in conducting materials subjected to the influence of high-power short electric pulses has been investigated theoretically and experimentally. The simulation of the behaviour of electric and magnetic fields in a metallic cylinder shows that melting followed by rapid quenching can occur in a thin skin layer if the amplitude of the passing electric pulse of several nanoseconds duration is high enough, i.e. of the order of 102 kA. It is demonstrated that since solidification of the molten layer occurs on a microsecond or sub-microsecond time scale, very high quenching rates in the range 108–109 K s−1 are achievable, which is considered sufficient for amorphization of a wide range of metallic systems. The experiments show satisfactory agreement with theoretical predictions.
