Art Spiegelman has called comics the “hunchback half-witted bastard step-child of the graphic arts” 1 to indicate the marginal status of this hybrid medium. As a popular cultural production, comics may be dismissed as disposable ephemera or juvenile entertainment, regardless of the age of the reader. Translation has a similar Rodney Dangerfield status: it don’t get no respect, either.
