The attenuation of Rayleigh waves in Westerly granite has been measured in the laboratory. For frequencies between 50 kc/s and about 400 kc/s the specific attenuation factor Q is substantially frequency independent. In this frequency range QR = 79.0 ± 1.6; this value is remarkably close to values obtained for earth materials excited at periods which are many orders of magnitude longer. For frequencies above 400 kc/s there is an additional component in the attenuation factor which varies approximately as the fourth power of the frequency; this suggests that Rayleigh scattering by the granular structure is the dominant mechanism for seismic attenuation in this frequency range.
