The article presents results of a survey on the content of total, inorganic and organic arsenic in muscle tissue and liver of marine turtles, Caretta caretta, beached along the Italian coast in South Adriatic Sea. Results of the study suggested that above all, primary producers such as microorganisms, phytoplankton and zooplankton, as well as algae and other organisms of the lower trophic stage, detoxicate arsenate by developing methylated substances, water-soluble arseno-sugars and fat-soluble arseno-phospholipids.
