An increasing body of evidence suggests that bone resorption is a dynamic and complex chain reaction which involves not only osteoclasts but also various other cell types. Scholars report here biochemical and immunohistochemical studies on collagenase production and localization in resorbing bone in tissue culture and propose a novel hypothesis for the mechanism of bone resorption. Almost all of the bone collagenase isolated from the tissue culture medium was found to be in the form of latent collagenase.
