" Rats were run for at least 21 days in activity wheels under either 19-hr., 24-hr., or 29-hr. feeding cycles. The 24-hr. Ss showed the usual'anticipation'of their regular feeding hour, but the a-diurnal Ss did not. Instead, their activity tended to occur either at a fixed time of day or, in some cases, 24 hr. after the last feeding. The results suggest that wheel-running activity is controlled either by external diurnal cues or by a'biological clock'with a natural 24-hr. period, but not by stimuli arising from deprivation per se."(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
