The 2004 hurricane season pummeled Florida with four storms, devastating parts of the state over a six-week span. The storms displaced thousands from their homes, and millions were without power for weeks. Despite greater accuracy in predicting and monitoring such storms, hurricanes are a seasonal threat. People must prepare for the worst if a storm threatens their homes, and recommendations on general hurricane preparedness are readily available. But for people with medical problems, further preparations may be needed. Although this article will focus specifically on issues vital to patients with cystic fibrosis, the recommendations can easily be applied to patients with other chronic pulmonary diseases. In addition, the information can also apply to other natural disasters—such as earthquakes, tornadoes, floods, ice storms, and blizzards—that can adversely affect patients with chronic illnesses. Previous reports have focused on emergency preparedness for caregivers and institutions, 1, 2 but patients also need to be taught how to prepare for such disasters.
