Experiments are described in which HTLV-III stocks (culture supernatant from H9/HTLV-III producer cells) were added to Cohn fractions of an anti-HTLV-III-negative donor plasma pool and little or no inactivation was demonstrated. The results do not imply that intravenous gammaglobulin preparations are unsafe. First, some manufacturers have incorporated steps that have the potential of inactivating viruses and secondly these experiments do not exclude the possibility that the virus may fractionate into fractions other than the gammaglobulin fraction. Surveillance of large numbers of patients that have received intravenous gammaglobulin, before blood donor screening was introduced, have not yet demonstrated HTLV-III transmission.newline˜I.V.D.
