Crystals of goat α-lactalbumin salted out with ammonium sulphate give a complex diffraction pattern which can be interpreted in terms of a periodic disordering of the crystal lattice. The fundamental unit cell appears to be orthorhombic in the space group I222 or I2 1 2 1 2 1 with dimensions: a= 67.6 A ̊, b= 109.7 A ̊, c= 68.9 A ̊. Additional sharp reflections occur along the reciprocal lattice rows in the a∗ direction, consistent with a periodic disordering of the lattice of wave-length 93.4 Å in this direction. These additional reflections are eliminated by soaking the crystals in 1 m m-potassium chloroplatinite.
