In Part 1 of this book, the editors have sought to present a systematic review of the modern knowledge of debris flows, debris avalanches, and debris floods, which has significant predictive value. Staff from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) have written eight chapters on the following topics: instability on steep slopes; debris-flow mechanics; hyperconcentrated flow; subaqueous debris flows (with Jacques Local); volcanic debris flows; debris-flow instrumentation; climatic factors influencing debris flow occurrence (with Thomas Glade); and wildfire-related debris flows. The duplication of a well-known diagram from Campbell's 1975 Professional Paper in both Chapters 4 and 14 is unfortunate; when Iverson's chapter on debris-flow mechanics borrows a diagram from Vallance's chapter on volcanic debris flows, the loan is acknowledged.
