Preferential flow paths of water in a melting snow cover are important for energy transfer in the liquid phase, solute transport, wet snow metamorphosis, and stability of the snowpack. Although the exist ence of this phenomenon is well recognized, few quantitative investiga tions have been conducted. The development and stability of flow paths was evaluated using multiple dye tracer application. Four differently colored dyes were applied and the flow path observed by excavating the snowpack at different times. Images of these profiles were captured with a digital camera, and the images sequentially analyzed. Some preliminary experiments using the fluorescent properties of lissamine were done. The observed dye patterns show that the flow paths were not stable over time and space. It can be concluded that the formation of preferential flow paths is highly dependent on the boundary conditions and no simple rule can be given for their formation and behavior.
