In 1990 we evaluated the biological exposure of 204 fishermen of the Lower North Shore of the St-Lawrence Gulf. Because of their relatively great intake of seafood, these isolated communities have great plasma concentrations of PCBs. However a specific dietary habit, sea-bird egg consumption, was strongly associated with these levels. Because fish consumption is probably partially responsible for the low mortality rate related to ischemic diseases observed in this region, hence public health recommendations were only oriented on the limitation of seabird eggs, marine mammal liver and fish liver consumption.
