The spreading of liquids on solid surfaces is frequently encountered in daily life, industrial processes, and biological phenomena. Despite the common occurrence of this process, little is known about the mechanism by which a liquid spreads over a solid surface (I). Various models for the type of motion exercised by the liquid at the solid-liquid-gas contact region have been postulated and discussed (2-9), especially in an effort to eliminate the difficulty posed by the no-slip condition of continuum hydrodynamics. Insufficient attention, however, has been given to the effect of the primary film, spreading ahead of the bulk of the liquid, as indicated by a few experimental observations (10-12). The mechanism of primary film formation is not yet entirely clear. While Hardy (10), who first reported the existence of such a film, believed that it was formed by deposition of liquid from the vapor, later work (11, 12) suggested that surface
