The evolution of the two-point correlation function xi on different scales due to gravitational clustering is studied. It is shown that for a given spectrum of primordial density fluctuations xi would be increased for those fluctuations that turned around on scales that are bigger than the typical turnaround scale of clustering hierarchy at the present epoch (scale of groups of galaxies); the increase depends on the mass (scale) of cluster and the power-slope of the spectrum of density fluctuations. It is suggested that clusters of galaxies have large (r) correlation strength because they are the objects that turned around on a large mass scale. The correlation of xi of clusters with their richness (mass) and mean separation are then explained naturally. 16 references.
