Recent and current developments in the understanding and description of soil behaviour and in the numerical analysis of geotechnical problems are discussed in this paper. An attempt has been made to relate these topics to the needs of practising engineers concerned with the design of major projects. The discussion of soil properties is concentrated on the pattern of behaviour of clays in monotonic tests, and the important correlations of the strength and stiffness of clays with the level of effective stresses and overconsolidation ratio. This behaviour is reviewed within the context of plasticity theory which has become the main framework for the analysis of problems in soil mechanics. The need to match both the choice of soil model and the method of analysis to the soil type and the nature of the engineering problem is emphasised. The benefits of simplicity of both model and analysis are underlined. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 287689. (Author/TRRL)
