The use of foamed plastics as structural materials represents an area of technology which is experiencing rapid growth as both new outlets and replacements for traditional materials appear. Whilst the economics of producing a foamed article in terms of use of material and maclvinery costs are obvious, it is in the exploitation of the specific mechanical properties of foamed structures that the main attraction lies. Rigid polyurethane foam is one of the most versatile of the candidate materials, it can be formed in a wide range of densities and possesses a high specific strength and toughness, and yet offers greater potential if these properties could be improved.
